My name is Ruth Nasrullah.
I am the current President of the Houston Pro chapter, a freelance journalist, and a candidate for SPJ national at-large director for the 2021-2023 term.
I have decided to run for a national position this year because the past year and a half has shown us how critical journalists are to uncovering truth and informing the public, and how challenging – even dangerous – the job can be.
The past year also brought us through the height of a pandemic.
The lesson it taught us – and still teaches – is that we are all interconnected.
That idea carries over into our professional lives. We’re in this together.
SPJ has developed great programs for advocacy, empowerment, training and diversity, and I believe we can do even better as we approach a future that is uncertain in so many ways.
I am running for at-large director to make sure that SPJ serves its members’ needs; that chapters thrive; freelancers prosper; and newsrooms reflect the faces of America. Representation matters.
Representation is also a key part of my running for a national director position. If I’m fortunate enough to be elected, I believe I will be the first Muslim woman on SPJ’s national board. That matters.
